Multi-purpose Cadastre Previous | Next
As population of the world grows, the consumption of land has also increased. Legal entities of land are increasingly being restricted by public interest as opposed to the traditional private rights restriction. A much stronger cadastral system is needed to provide security of the land tenure. Responsive to this fact, the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) has introduced Cadastre 2014 concept, which envisioned a cadastral system that can be used beyond land registration and titling, for instance, property inventory, crime prevention and detection, utility management, census mapping, agricultural forecasting, and others. Such cadastral system is generally known as multipurpose cadastre.

Many countries in Asia Pacific have taken steps to revolutionize their cadastral system to become multipurpose. Malaysia is currently undertaking a pilot project in one of its Federal Territories, Putrajaya, to provide informative insight on the future direction in implementing nationwide multipurpose cadastre and new cadastral management in the country. Singapore is transforming their cadastral system into full 3D cadastre in order to cope with their dense on-ground and underground development. Republic of Korea, too, has undertaken pilot project for 3D cadastre mapping in its capital, Seoul, and developing the country’s 3D NSDI policy.

The session shall focus on multipurpose cadastre development in the region, in terms of policy, implementation, partnerships, and technology availability.
