Greater KL Previous | Next
Greater Kuala Lumpur (KL) is one of the twelve (12) National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs) identified under the Economic Transformation Programme of Malaysia. It comprises the national capital of Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding satellite cities. By 2020, Greater KL aims to be among the top 20 cities in the world in terms of economic growth and liveability.

Today, Greater KL is an important economic growth cluster, contributing eight (8) times the GDP of any other city in Malaysia. Greater KL has boosted the construction industry in Malaysia with various major infrastructure development projects, which also opens up many doors for geospatial applications. A few significant projects:
  • High speed rail connecting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore
The high speed rail is expected to increase demand for leisure travel in Malaysia, with an estimated increase of RM2 to 5 billion in net tourism spending per year.  Significant reductions in travel time will drive worker productivity with a potential value of up to RM 130 - 150 million per year in time savings and could unlock demand for Greater KL property.
  • My Rapid Transit (MRT)
Connecting Kuala Lumpur to the sub-urban areas. This project will contribute RM3-4 billion annually to Greater KL’s Gross National Income aspirations with massive spillover impacts on the construction industry and productivity savings.
  • Klang River Waterfront
To  transform  the  Klang River  into  a  vibrant  and  liveable  waterfront  with  high  economic  value.  This transformation is divided into three components: river cleaning, river master-planning, beautification and river development.
  • Greener Kuala Lumpur
An initiative to improve liveability by creating a more comfortable living environment and providing spaces for healthy recreational activities. 30,000 trees will be planted around Kuala Lumpur per year, or 100,000 trees by 2020, that includes tree inventory with tree tagging and a database of trees to facilitate future urban planning and maintenance of greenery.
