In April and June respectively, Philippines and Indonesia launched their earth observation microsatellites, with main functions to monitor climate and environment. Malaysia's Near Equatorial Orbit satellite, RazakSAT-2 is also scheduled to be launched soon. With technological advancements, Asia Pacific space sector is now witnessing exciting developments both upstream and downstream. With an increasing role in global GNSS and remote sensing demand and supply, the region is strengthening its technical capabilities in space.
European GNSS Agency recently reported that Asia is currently the primary region of global market growth in terms of in-use GNSS devices. The region is forecasted to grow 11% per year, from 1.7 billion in 2014 to 4.1 billion devices in 2023 – more than the EU and North America combined. The region is also becoming increasingly active in chipset manufacturing, along with building its own constellations.
The Innovations in Space Technologies programme at GeoSmart Asia 2016 will bring together the leading space agencies in the region to share their visions in space innovations, discuss collaboration framework and demonstrate application developments in this domain.
